Republican Leaders Comment on Candidate Filings for Kentucky State House

House Republican Floor Leader Jeff Hoover made the following comment regarding Republican candidates filing for the Kentucky House of Representatives:

“Today’s filing deadline has been met with an unprecedented number of quality Republican candidates.  The fact that Republicans are seeking election in 91 out of 100 districts shows it’s a new day in Kentucky – one in which Republicans have clearly committed to forging a new direction for the Commonwealth, driven by a new majority.”

State Representative Jonathan Shell, House Republican Campaign Chair, remarked:

“House Republicans accomplished our recruitment goals for 2016.  We have candidates in every corner of the state, in nearly every district.  We have inspiring candidates who will bring a new majority to the people’s House and who will govern this state the way Kentuckians deserve.

“They are farmers, business leaders, teachers, pastors, and community leaders who are ready to bring conservative change to Frankfort.  I, along with the entire House Republican Caucus, stand ready to help them succeed.”

Mac Brown, Chairman of the Republican Party of Kentucky, said:

“I am grateful for Representative Shell’s outstanding work to recruit capable leaders in every part of Kentucky who want to use their talents to serve in the State House.  His tireless efforts have put Republicans in an extraordinary position as we seek to secure a new majority and move Kentucky forward.  I look forward to continue working with him and Leader Hoover to see the House turn red in 2016.”

Background on Republican Recruitment for the State House

In the November 2015 election for governor, Matt Bevin won 26 State House districts held by a Democrat.  In 2014, 13 of those Democrat-held districts were uncontested by Republicans.  This year, a Republican candidate has filed in 25 of those 26 districts.

Of those 26 Democrat-held House districts, Bevin received 55% or better in 15 of them.  In 2014, seven of those 15 districts were uncontested by Republicans.  This year, a Republican candidate has filed in 14 of those 15 districts.

In 2014, Republicans had only three non-incumbent women candidates for the State House.  This year, there are 11.

Altogether, Republican candidates filed to run in 91 out of 100 State House districts this year.
