RPK: Democratic House Leadership Abandon’s Kentucky Values for DC Dollars

The Republican Party of Kentucky (RPK) accused Democratic State House leaders of turning their backs on Kentuckians in an effort to save their political positions Wednesday. The attack comes after the revelation that House Speaker Greg Stumbo, House Speaker Pro Tem Jody Richards, House Majority Leader Rocky Adkins and House Majority Caucus Chair Sannie Overly will all be appearing at a fundraiser for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) in Washington, DC on Thursday, August 4th (see attachment).

“While Kentucky’s Republican leaders are beginning to travel west for the great tradition that is the Fancy Farm picnic, the entire Democratic House leadership team is going hat-in-hand to Washington to grovel for donations for an organization whose biggest financiers in 2014 were an anti-gun and anti-coal activist and national labor unions,” said RPK Communications Director Tres Watson.

The DLCC’s website describes it as a 527 committee “tasked with winning and defending state legislative majorities.” Financial records show billionaire and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a prominent financier of anti-gun rights and anti-coal organizations was the largest source of donations in 2014. His anti-gun rights group “Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund” donated $1,121,500, his company, Bloomberg LP, donated another $600,000 while the City of New York, with Michael Bloomberg as Mayor donated another $325,000.1 Bloomberg has also donated $50 million to the Sierra Club’s ‘Beyond Coal’ campaign.

The DLCC is also heavily financed by national labor unions with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees ($1,525,250), the Teamsters ($750,000), the American Federation of Teachers (700,000), and the National Education Association ($600,000) appearing as other top donors. Many of these same organizations are also major donors to Kentucky Family Values PAC, the Democratic Super PAC known for launching negative attack ads against Republican candidates.

“It’s clear whose interests House Democrats really serve,” said Watson. “It’s time we elect new a new majority in the House, one that represents Kentuckians, not liberal special interests.”
