Grimes’ Continued Silence on Keystone XL

The Kentucky GOP released the following statement today in response to Alison Lundergan Grimes’ continued silence on the building of the Keystone XL pipeline and Barack Obama’s actions to delay making a decision on its construction.

“It’s unacceptable that every time a legitimate issue presents itself in this race Alison Lundergan Grimes essentially gives the cold shoulder to Kentucky voters who want to know where she stands,” said Kelsey Cooper, spokesperson for the Kentucky GOP. “Her silence on Keystone XL is further proof that she’s obviously only comfortable reiterating the talking points handed down by Harry Reid and their liberal buddies.”

BACKGROUND

“Grimes Has Avoided Taking A Position On The Project” “Kentucky Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, who is running to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, has avoided taking a position on the project. In contrast, she has had no trouble distancing herself from other aspects of Obama’s energy agenda, for instance by criticizing the EPA’s proposed greenhouse gas rules for power plants. The McConnell campaign quickly pounced Friday, alleging that Grimes “refuses to tell Kentuckians the truth about where she stands on critical issues like the Keystone XL pipeline out of knowing that her views do not align with the views of the hardworking men and women in the Commonwealth.” A Grimes spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.” (Politico, 4/20/14)

MSNBC: Grimes Twisting In The Wind On Keystone XL “In Kentucky, Grimes, of course, twisting in the wind on this one, not picking one side or the other.” (Morning Joe, 4/21/14)

Grimes Won’t Say If She Supports Keystone XL “For example, when asked Tuesday morning if she would support the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, Grimes gave the following non-answer: “I believe in a balanced, commonsense approach that both strengthens KY’s economy and avoids environmental risk. I will evaluate policy decisions on such issues based on that core principle.” (National Review, 2/4/14)

Grimes Once “Held Court With More Than A Dozen San Francisco Bay Activists” And Discussed A Host Of Issues Including Keystone XL And Climate Change. “Grimes held court with more than a dozen San Francisco Bay Area activists prior to a Buell fundraiser on topics ranging from women’s issues, immigration and filibuster reform to Keystone XL and climate change, according to one attendee. And her views on issues outside of environment and energy policy may be what attracted backers like Buell — as well as an endorsement from EMILY’s List, which supports Democratic female candidates who favor abortion rights.” (Politico, 11/11/13)

·      Buell Is “An Outspoken Opponent Of Keystone XL.” “Buell, who has been an outspoken opponent of Keystone XL, didn’t offer any details about the Grimes’s fundraiser, including the amount of money raised. ‘We had a great event [with] lively conversation among people very concerned [about] the future,’ Buell said. ‘Alison was very impressive. Her vibrant attitude, command of the issues, concern for the future, absolute conviction and spunky energy was very refreshing.’” (Politico, 11/11/13)
