RPK Launches Ads Against Stumbo, Adkins as Battle for Control of the House Heats Up
FRANKFORT- As the race for control of the Kentucky State House heats up, the Republican Party of Kentucky (RPK) launched radio ads against Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo and House Majority Leader Rocky Adkins on Tuesday.
An ad running in Stumbo’s Floyd and Pike County district links Stumbo’s support for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama with statements they have made attacking the coal industry. The ad uses clips of Clinton saying, “we’re gonna put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business” and Obama’s line that “If somebody wants to build a coal powered plant, they can, it’s just that it will bankrupt them.” It goes on to use audio of Stumbo voicing his blanket endorsement for the anti-coal agendas of Clinton and Obama. Stumbo is being challenged by Republican Larry Brown, an attorney who lives in Prestonsburg.
“I cannot begin to fathom how Greg Stumbo rectifies his representing the people of Floyd and Pike Counties with his support for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama,” said RPK spokesman Tres Watson. “It boggles the mind how a man who purports to represent the heart of East Kentucky coal country could endorse the two politicians working the hardest to kill what coal jobs remain in the region.”
RPK’s ad airing in Adkins’ district, which encompasses Elliott, Lewis and Rowan Counties, accuses Adkins of being out of touch with his district. The spot points to Adkins votes for tax increases, a pension increases for legislators, also known as the ‘greed bill’, and the implementation of Common Core, which takes decision making power out of local schools and put it into the hands of Washington bureaucrats. Adkins is challenged by Republican Wendy Fletcher, a nurse practitioner from Morehead.
“When Rocky Adkins is home in Sandy Hook, he tells folks he’s one of them,” said Watson. “But people in Frankfort know his voting record and know who he really is: just another liberal politician doing nothing to help the people of Northeastern Kentucky.”
“Greg Stumbo and Rocky Adkins no longer represent the people of their districts or the people of Kentucky,” said Watson. “They shouldn’t be worried about maintaining their majority in the House, they should be worried about winning re-election.”
