FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 2, 2023) – The Republican Party of Kentucky issued the following statement amid reports that the Governor quietly appointed his own staff and political allies to the Kentucky Educational Television Authority, the board governing Kentucky Educational Television.
“Kentucky Republicans and Democrats agree: Kentucky Educational Television is the ‘crown jewel’ of Kentucky journalism and that it provides an important public service to Kentuckians,” RPK spokesman Sean Southard said. “But Andy Beshear can’t leave things well enough alone. He appointed his current communications director and the wife of his top aide to the board overseeing the state’s public television network. While no one is questioning the impartiality of KET, this is a clear problem for anyone who cares about the network. Can you imagine if a Republican governor appointed his or her communications director to the governing board of the state’s public network that covers the Governor? Andy Beshear would have sued! This blatant political move boggles the mind and the Governor ought to explain why he thought this was appropriate.”
