Kentucky Republicans lead charge to protect coal

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Electricity Security and Affordability Act – a measure that would protect affordable and reliable electricity and would allow for an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy.

Kentucky Republicans lead

Republican members of Kentucky’s House delegation led the charge: the bill is sponsored by Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01) and co-sponsored by Reps. Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Thomas Massie (KY-04), Hal Rogers (KY-05), and Andy Barr (KY-06).

Kentucky’s Republican House members are working hard to protect Kentucky against Barack Obama’s aggressive war on coal, jobs, and low energy costs.

Kentucky Republicans on the bipartisan legislation

Yesterday, Congressman Whitfield and a Democrat Senator wrote: “Our bill will base emissions standards for new plants on the best performing technologies actually in use today. For existing plants, Congress will weigh in to ensure that states are accorded the proper role intended for them under the Clean Air Act, and that consumers are not subject to skyrocketing costs. Far from barring EPA from controlling greenhouse gas emissions, by insisting on standards based on proven technologies our approach will actually work.”

Congressman Guthrie on his vote supporting the legislation: “Voted today for the Electricity Security & Affordability Act, a bipartisan bill to reign in Obama’s attacks on Kentucky coal.”

Congressman Barr on the bill’s passage: “Kentucky families depend on coal to keep the lights on. That is why I am glad that today, the House passed legislation I cosponsored which provides a future for the coal industry with benefits for the environment and American economy….This is a major step towards preventing the EPA’s attempt to turn the lights out on Kentucky families and our economic recovery.”

Broad support for the measure

The Kentucky Coal Association supports the legislation, as do many agriculture, energy, labor, and business organizations.
