Grimes breaks promise to talk coal at Reid fundraiser

The Kentucky GOP released the following statement from spokeswoman Kelsey Cooper in response to reports that Alison Lundergan Grimes lied to Kentuckians and broke her promise to use her fundraiser with ‘coal makes us sick’ Harry Reid to advocate for Kentucky coal:

“It has been clear since day one that Alison Grimes has told her anti-coal fundraisers one thing and Kentuckians another and now we have proof. It’s one thing to toe the Obama line, it’s another to lie about it.”

BACKGROUND

POLITICO: Alison Lundergan Grimes mum on coal at private fundraiser “Alison Lundergan Grimes’ campaign insisted last week that she’d use a high-dollar fundraiser with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid as a forum to promote Kentucky’s coal industry and demand action to protect the use of fossil fuel. That didn’t happen, according to an audio recording of the affair obtained by POLITICO through a source at the event….The one word she didn’t say during her 11-minute speech: “coal.”” (Politico, 6/9/14)

HERALD LEADER: Grimes didn’t defend coal during D.C. speech as promised, according to report “Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes promised to defend Kentucky’s coal industry during a fundraiser with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid last week, but she never mentioned coal during an 11-minute speech at the Washington, D.C., event, Politico reported Monday. In an audio recording of the speech obtained by Politico, Grimes instead criticized Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s record on jobs, the minimum wage and women’s issues, prompting McConnell’s campaign to accuse Grimes of misleading Kentucky voters.” (Herald Leader, 6/9/14)

CN2: Grimes says she used fundraiser with U.S. Sen. Harry Reid to talk coal, others say she didn’t “After assuring Kentuckians that she would use a fundraiser with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to press the issue of coal, attendees at the event say Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes did not bring the issue up once.” (CN2, 6/9/14)
