Grimes Campaign Struggling After Breaking Promise

Alison Lundergan Grimes’ campaign is really scrambling to mitigate the effects of her broken promise to Kentuckians and struggling to explain why she did not in fact “use the event” as a way “to share the stories of how Kentuckians are hurting,” nor did she speak to “Reid and the donors.” While it’s clear their campaign has desperately been trying to salvage their rapidly disappearing credibility, their most recent response is just flat out contradictory.

Check out their evolving responses below.

Before Reid Fundraiser:

“Alison is absolutely livid about the new rule and plans to use the event to share the stories of how Kentuckians are hurting and demand that the Senate take action to invest in clean coal technology,” Grimes spokeswoman Charly Norton said in a statement last week ahead of the fundraiser.” (Politico, 6/9/14)

Saturday:

“On Saturday, Grimes’ campaign manager, Jonathan Hurst, told The Associated Press that the candidate spoke to Reid and the donors at the fundraiser where she “offered real stories of Kentuckians struggling to make ends meet and stressed that we need a comprehensive, balanced approach that reins in the EPA, invests in clean coal technology and keeps foreign markets open for Kentucky coal.” (Politico, 6/9/14)

Monday:

“On Monday, the Grimes campaign said it stands “100 percent” by its previous comments and argued there was no inconsistency in statements before and after the event. “Alison had strong words [with Reid] with regards to the EPA ruling,” Hurst told POLITICO. “We definitely did exactly what we said we were going to do.”” (Politico, 6/9/14)

Tuesday Morning:

“The Grimes campaign did not dispute the authenticity of the recording, but spokeswoman Charly Norton said Politico was being “selective” in its reporting. While Grimes did not discuss the EPA rules in her speech, “we used the event and the opportunity to speak to (Senate Majority) Leader (Harry) Reid” privately, Norton said. “Because (coal) wasn’t in her speech is silly,” Norton added.” (Courier-Journal, 6/10/14)

Tuesday Afternoon:

“Grimes spokeswoman Charly Norton said Grimes never planned to talk about coal in her speech. She said Grimes spoke with Reid privately at the fundraiser about coal.” (Frankfort State-Journal, 6/11/14)
